Downend Bike Ride - Saturday 19 June 2010

A fine sunny afternoon on Saturday 19th June saw members of the Parish Council, together with family and friends, take part in the Parish Council's annual bike ride.  Our destination this year was Frenchay Village Museum.  Those of us who do not cycle walked along a prepared route by our Open Spaces Chairman, Mary Lewis, using mainly footpaths and rights of way through our Parish and into the neighbouring parish of Winterbourne.

On arrival, we partook of refreshments, kindly provided by one of our Parish Councillors, after which we toured the museum.

The museum gives an insight into the lives of some of the people who formed an unusual community - many of whom were non-conformist Quakers and Unitarians, often of local, national and international importance.

All in all, a most interesting afternoon and well worth a visit for an insight into the "story of a unique village".  For further details and information go to www.frenchay.org/museum or telephone 0117 9570942.

Incidentally, on Saturday 17th July the museum is holding a "Vintage Vehicle Extravaganza" in conjunction with Frenchay Flower show - for further details phone 0117 9570942.

Christmas Lights - Thursday 26 November 2009

The weather was dry, at long last, and it was good to have so many families come along to see Jessica Hopton, a local resident and young international Badminton player, switch on the Christmas Tree lights outside the Horsehoe Public House in the centre of Downend.

Craig Anthonys, hairdressers at the Willow Shopping Centre, were on hand to provide hot soup for the early crowds.  Our thanks to all concerned.

Father Christmas was kept extremely busy, listening to the children telling him their wishes and what they hoped to receive for Christmas.

Everyone enjoyed listening to the Salvation Army playing the Christmas Carols we have come to know so well, eating hot mince pies supplied by Melanie's Kitchen.  Fabulous!  Our thanks to Mel and Peter.

Thanks also to the Police Community Support Officers Justin Gay and Katrina Sheldrake who did a brilliant job looking after us all.

Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council will repeat the event in 2010 on Friday 26 November, hopefully even bigger and better!  Make a note in your diary and look out for details nearer the time!
