Annual Assembly, April 2017
This year, the Parish Council held its Annual Assembly at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Downend on 27th April. All residents are welcome to attend, and we appreciate your presence.
The Annual Assembly is held to give a report on the activities and achievements of the Parish Council over the past year – in other words, the work we have undertaken on behalf of our residents.
The Chair, Cllr Janet Biggin, gave a brief report on the work of the Parish Council, reminding everyone that the Council now operates from Downend Library, and that there are open mornings (Mondays and Wednesdays) when residents are welcome to call in to meet our Clerk, Angela Hocking, as well as any other Parish Councillors who are present.
The Council’s Planning Committee Chair, Mike Baker, gave a short report on its activities and successes, and the Vice Chair, Ben Burton, gave a report on the status of the Playing Fields and Sports Pitches, for which the Parish Council are now responsible.
The Parish Council runs an online booking system which can be used by residents and sports groups, and this is accessible through the Parish Council website. In addition, Angela is on the end of the telephone line to answer any queries if necessary.
Last but certainly not least, Cllr Biggin announced the winners of the Parish Champion Awards:
- Bromley Heath Scouts and Guides (voluntary category)
- Cleeve Wood Pharmacy (business category)
- Graeme Riley (posthumous award – individual category).
The Parish Council makes these awards for outstanding service in each category.
The members of the Parish Council looks forward to the forthcoming year when we will continue to serve the area of Downend and Bromley Heath. We welcome your input and would like to remind you that there is still a vacancy if anyone would like to come forward to join us.
Christmas in Downend, November 2015
With the support of the Downend Business Community (DBC), Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council once again arranged the Christmas Lighting Event in Downend Village. Friday 27th November was quite an evening! Whilst the weather was kind to us at the beginning, unfortunately the heavens opened which meant that poor Santa’s grotto had to move from his gazebo to Kustom Flooring! D&BH Parish Council would like to extend their sincere thanks to Kustom Floors who, as always, have been so supportive of our Christmas festivities. Eventually, the decision was taken to abandon the event and the Christmas tree was lit earlier than anticipated by Elsa from Frozen who braved the wind and rain. The Black Panther Allstar Cheerleaders performed in atrocious conditions and the Bromley Heath WI Choir, dressed in their tinsel, also performed on the stage. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED AND PARTICIPATED!! Whilst the whole night was filled with entertainment with children from the local schools of Christ Church, Bromley Heath and St Augustines singing their Christmas songs, balloon modelling, face painting, warm mince pies from Sainsburys and much more, the weather meant we all had to go home much earlier than anticipated. Fingers crossed for next year…..
Thank you also to everyone who made a contribution to our Charity of the Year, Kingswood Community Transport.
Christmas 2016 will be held on SATURDAY 19TH NOVEMBER!!!
